私のグリッド観

　グリッドについて、幾人もの（例えばS.コストフのような）碩学が考察してきた以上の考えはない。

　グリッド・パターンは、計画的な都市において、今のところ最も一般的である。グリッドは、古今東西どこにも見ることができる。普遍的な手法といっていいだろう。異なる場所での標準的な計画として、あるいは、土地の公平な分配の手段や、不動産を区分けし売りやすくする手段として、グリッドに勝る都市計画的解決法はない。また、真直ぐな道路の防衛上の利点はアリストテレスの時代から認識されてきたし、また直線的な街路パターンは住民を監視するためのの手段であった。画一的で面白味に欠けるのがグリッドである。

　しかし、グリッドは必ずしも融通のきかない手法ではない。街路の幅、街区の大きさによって都市景観は異なる。空間の編成もことなる。むしろ逆に、グリッドは非常に柔軟で多様性のある計画システムであり、それ故に多大な成功を収めてきたと考えた方がいいぐらいだ。あらゆるグリッドに共通と考えられるのは、街路パターンが直交的であることであるが、それも普遍的なことではない。地図として、二次元の平面で見ればそうかもしれないけれど、地面が傾斜していれば全く多様な景観が出現する。街区の大きさと形、及びその内部の構造、オープンスペースとその分布、公共建築の表情などによって全く異なるのである。

　むしろ、問題は明らかである。グリッドの豊かな可能性を追求することなく導入されるグリッドの手法である。今のところ、グリッドを用いたダイアグラムとコスモロジーに興味を持っている。

 

 

　I have not special idea on the Grid beyond those many scholars including S. Kostof  pointed out.

　The Grid pattern is generally seen in almost all the planned cities. That can be said universal method because we can see it in West and East, past and present. It is used as a standard planning method, techniques of equivalent land division and speculative planning. There is no other way superior to the Grid as the method of protection. The straightforward street system is good to control the activities of inhabitants. People says the grid is monotonous and not so interesting.

　Nevertheless, the grid system is not uniform and not boring. The cityscapes are different according to the size of blocks and streets. Space formation can be various based on the local conditions. It is better to think that the grid system can be seen everywhere because it can produce the variety. The same orthogonal system becomes completely different if the grounds decline. The map does not show the real space formation. The grids differ according to the size and form of the blocks, their internal structure, the distribution of open space, the quality of public facilities  and so on

　The problems are clearly understood that the grid are easily used without thinking the rich possibilities. I myself am interested in the relation between the grid diagram and cosmology.
